Tree Peony Festival – Linwood Gardens{Comments Off}

Two cobblestone columns mark the entrance to Linwood Gardens. Situated just outside York, approx 30 mins south of Rochester, Linwood is a private residence whose owner opens it to the public three weekends a year when the tree peonies bloom – usually the first weekend in June and the last two weekends in May. Her father, William Gratwick III, was a landscape architect who cultivated and hybridized tree peonies, and was an amateur sculptor. Duries the 3 weekends it is open, the visitor literally has to catch their breath at the beauty and bounty of the blooms that flourish. Originally, a summer home, for a wealthy Buffalo shipbuilder, the visitor is taken back to turn of the century English gardens. During the summer painting and writing workshop s are held at Linwood. I am grateful for having encountered this enchanted garden which affords sanctuary from the life’s stresses.
